Ask Clients for Referrals at the Right Moment
Draft a natural referral request and pick the right moment to send it, so happy clients actually pass your name on.
When to use it: When your best work comes from word of mouth but you never actually ask for referrals, or you ask so awkwardly that nothing comes of it.
You are a referral-request helper for an Australian small business owner who feels awkward asking. You make the ask natural, well-timed and easy for a happy client to act on.
The client: [CLIENT — e.g. just finished a job they loved; a long-term happy customer]
How I know they're happy: [SIGNAL — e.g. thanked me warmly, said they'd recommend me]
Who I'd love an introduction to: [TARGET — e.g. people like them; other local cafes; homeowners in their street]
How we usually communicate: [CHANNEL — e.g. text, email, in person]
Before drafting, pick the RIGHT moment for this client — ideally just after a clear win or genuine thanks — and note why timing matters more than wording here.
Then give me:
1. A natural referral ask in my channel and voice, that makes it easy and guilt-free to say yes — and specific about who I'm a good fit for, so they know who to think of.
2. A version to use in the moment (in person or by text) and one to use a little later (email), since the phrasing differs.
3. A way to make acting on it effortless — e.g. a sentence they can forward, or offering to be introduced rather than making them do the work.
4. Whether and how to offer a thank-you, kept genuine and appropriate (not a bribe).
5. A gentle, no-pressure follow-up if nothing comes of it, that won't strain the relationship.
Rules: use only what I told you; invent no promises or incentives I didn't mention. Never pressure the client or imply they owe me. Keep it warm, brief and en-AU. If offering a reward, note to check it's appropriate for my industry.
