Referral Ask That Isn't Awkward
Ask happy clients for referrals at the exact right moment, in one short message
When to use it: Use within a week of a genuine win or thank-you from a client
Write my referral ask.
CLIENT: [NAME]. The recent win/nice thing they said: [PASTE — this is the trigger]. Who my ideal referral is: [DESCRIBE THE BUSINESS/PERSON]. What I offer referrers (if anything): [THANK-YOU GESTURE or "nothing, and that's fine"].
Rules:
1. Reference their win/words first — the ask rides on a real moment.
2. Ask for ONE introduction to ONE described type of person, not "anyone who might need me".
3. Make it effortless: include a forwardable paragraph they can send as-is, written in THEIR voice about me (2 sentences, no hype).
4. Give an easy out ("if no one comes to mind, this email self-destructs guilt-free").
Under 120 words + the forwardable paragraph. Two variants: email and LinkedIn DM.
